These nine enchanting islands are located in the middle of the Atlantic and are a short 4-hour flight from Boston. This 6-day itinerary will make sure you explore all the Azores has to offer – by visiting 3 of the main islands!
Day 1: Welcome to the Green Island
Upon your arrival at Ponta Delgada International Airport you’ll be met by a driver and brought to your city center hotel. The rest of the day is yours to explore the cobblestone streets of the Azores’ largest city. Visit on the areas volcanic black sand beaches or visit the baroque lava stone church of Senhor Santo Cristo.
Day 2: Full Day Furnas Tour
A morning pick up from your hotel for a scenic drive around the island. The first stop will be in the beautiful seaside town of Vila Franca do Campo and then on to Terra Nostra Park to visit the award winning botanical garden. The tour continues to Lagoa das Furnas, where you will be able to watch your lunch, Cozido das Furnas, being prepared directly in the hot springs. After lunch you will continue to Miradouro do Ferro, where you will see the archipelagos oldest crater, home to some of the world’s richest hydro polis of the world with 22 different kinds of mineral/medicinal waters. On your return journey to Ponta Delgada you’ll stop at Tea Factory and Miradouro de Santa Iria to take in the breathtaking views
Day 3: Your Day to Explore
Today is yours to explore Sao Miguel on your own or visit the Island of the Sun, Santa Maria. You also have the option of adding a whale watching tour.
Day 4: Welcome to the Blue Island, Faial
After a short ride back to Ponta Delgada Airport, take a 50-minute flight over to Faial, known as the Blue Island due to all of the hydrangea hedges. Take the afternoon to explore the main town of Horta, the ruins of the Santa Cruz Fort, the Faial Botanical Gardens, or just relax poolside getting ready for tomorrow’s great adventure.
Day 5: Tour to Pico, the Mountain Island
Take a morning ferry transfer from Horta marina over to Pico, the Mountain Island to explore the highest peak in Portugal. This full-day tour gives you a great overview of the terrain and history of Pico Island, and you will learn what makes this island so much different from the other two you’ve visited previously. Return to Faial by ferry, enjoying the late afternoon sun on the ocean.
Day 6: Half Day Faial Volcano tour
Tour up to the top of Capelinhos volcano on the western side of the island, and around the island, visiting various look out points and historical monuments before returning to Horta for one last night in the Azores.
Day 7: Until Next Time
After breakfast you’ll have some time to shop for your souvenirs or simply relax with the locals at an oceanfront café before your transfer back to the Horta airport for your flight home.
